No one knows exactly when it happened. But at some point, most people became more comfortable communicating on devices than in person.

They’d been emailing and calling for years. Now, though, texting, tweeting, posting and FaceTiming were the preferred modes of communication.

They were efficient, but something was lost. People forgot the feel of a friendly smile, shaking hands and embracing. They walked along brick sidewalks on cell phones, detached from the quiet beauty around them. They no longer saw the unique expression of a face or heard the true tone of a voice.

People were no longer social, but their devices were.
