Based on how much homeowners pay in mortgage costs, Massachusetts ranked behind only New Jersey and California, with median monthly mortgage payments of $1,781, or 8.3 percent higher than in 2004, when the Bay State ranked fourth. Meanwhile, the state’s median household income of $57,184 — fifth among states — gained just 2.7 percent.
