Visiting my friends Beacon Hill condo -Short story

In the Jewish religion its a practice to light candles called yahrzeit as memorials for the recently ones that passed away. So when I visited my friends two-bedroom Beacon Hill condo and saw she had four yahrzeit candles lit, I became concerned.

“I’m sorry for your loss,” I said.

“What are you talking about?” she responded.

Pointing to the candles, I asked, “Do you know what those candles represent?”

“Sure,” she said. “A good deal, four for a dollar”

Why do Jews light yahrzeit candles?

The Yahrzeit candle is reminiscent of the fragility of life and that the memory of the lost loved one still lives on and burns bright. The Yiddish word “Yahrzeit” means anniversary (or time of year) and originates from the German words Jahr, year, and Zeit, time. “The soul of man is the candle of God.”
