Not all marketing works … here’s proof
Because I own a Boston real estate company most of the emails and phone calls I get are from people trying to sell me advertising or real estate sale leads. The rest of them are from scammer and people fishing for information.
I’m very selective to click on a link in an email or a text message and some of the phone calls I get show up as “spam likely” on my caller ID and so I don’t answer.
Advertisers pitching products and stories send an email and I ignore them. Sometimes they send emails stating that they are “circling back” because I have not responded. At that point, I usually mark them as spam so they go into that huge spam folder in the cloud.
There isn’t any rule anywhere that says I have to answer an email. I do answer them promptly when they are from someone who is in need of my services for a Beacon Hill apartment, Boston condo or if they are from someone I know or am working with.
When I was in high school my father used to get very irritated if I answered the phone during supper. He used to say “just because it rings doesn’t mean you have to answer it”. This was before the days of answering machines, caller ID, and mobile phones. He did have a point and it can be applied to any form of electronic message.
Just because someone sends me an email that doesn’t mean that I have to read it or answer it. Over the years I have gotten really good at ignoring advertisers.
If you want more email, mail, and phone calls from marketers, spammers and scammers start a business. Small businesses, especially those in the real estate industry are targets for spam and scams, including ransom wear attacks, and money wiring fraud. They have become so common that they are easier than ever to ignore.

From Inman News:
ING DIRECT is seeding Web sites like YouTube with short films and video games “that look at the stark realities that American’s [sic] face as renters.” The goal? To get those hip kids who are so enthralled with the virtual world to think about buying a house in the real one. With an ING mortgage.
The short films and video games ING has seeded around the Internet link to a Web site where the enterprising surfer will find … a “hidden secret mortage offer that effectively reduces the closing costs on the Orange Mortgage to zero … “
In a press release, ING says it’s the company’s “first ever viral marketing campaign.”
Note to ING marketing team: viral marketing campaigns are usually not accompanied by press releases.
