Searching for a Beacon Hill apartment for a college student
Mom and Dad were so proud of my decision to attend a local university in Boston that they said I could rent a nearby apartment. “As long as you keep your grades up- keep your side of the bargain,” they’d said. I’d really pulled it together the last couple of years of high school. They were both surprised and impressed.
I’d heard stories about dorm rooms- the noise, the cramped conditions. Sure, it sounded fun, but I figured I’d rather visit and hang out, and have my own sweet spot to return back to. I think Mom and Dad agreed- they didn’t want to interfere with the good thing I had going with my newfound high grades. I think they thought if I had a quiet place to study and sleep, my success was that much more likely.Fast forward to that spectacular summer day we found the perfect apartment across from the Boston Common. Second floor, windows facing east to catch the morning sun, a one bedroom with a living room and kitchenette and bath. I envisioned both quiet nights of preparing for my degree, and also having other celebratory evenings with my closest friends stopping by to watch the Celts game. Even a girlfriend might be in the not so distant future.I thanked Mom and Dad for the investment they were making in me, promising them I’d dig in hard.
