Massachusetts Colleges excel in U.S. News & World Report rankings
Massachusetts has some of the best colleges and universities in the country, and more than a dozen of them made U.S. News & World Report’s Best National University Rankings list.
It’s not surprising two Bay State universities on the list broke the top 3.
Massachusetts Institute of Technology came in No. 2 behind Princeton University. Harvard University took the No. 3 spot. Stanford University and Yale rounded out the top five.
U.S. News & World Report ranked nearly 1,500 U.S. four-year bachelor’s degree-granting colleges and universities, grouping them within 10 overall ranks in which they were compared with schools that shared their academic mission. The survey looked at 17 criteria, including first-year retention rates, graduation rate performance, first-generation graduation rates, financial resources per student and borrower debt.
Other Massachusetts schools that made the list include Boston College and Tufts University, which tied for the No. 37 spot. Boston University came in at No. 41, Northeastern University at No. 54, University of Massachusetts at Amherst No. 58, Brandeis University at No. 63 and Worcester Polytechnic Institute at No. 86.

Massachusetts city makes Fortune’s Best Places to Live list
A Massachusetts city has made Fortune’s 2024 Best Places to Live for Families list.
Fortune analyzed more than 2,000 cities across 200 data categories, assessing livability, financial health, resources for aging adults, education and wellness.
The winning areas are “sustainable for their youngest and oldest residents — including many fast-growing suburbs and edge cities that find creative ways to improve people’s well-being,” Fortune said.
The cities and towns that made the list are areas where multigenerational families can thrive, as older people are choosing to age in place with younger generations like Gen Z looking for a place they can truly call home.
Somerville broke the top 15, coming in at No. 11 on the list.
Located under 20 minutes from Boston, Somerville was noted for its convenient access to the city “while also feeling like its own separate space,” offering a “suburban-meets-urban vibe with an underlying college town feel, thanks to Tufts University.” And while it doesn’t have a downtown area, its proximity to Boston makes up for it. Plus, it has more than 60 parks within walking distance for most residents.
Massachusetts wasn’t the only New England community to make the list. Portsmouth, New Hampshire, ranked No. 10.
Silver Spring, Maryland, topped the list, followed by Upper Merion, Pennsylvania, and Chantilly, Virginia. Ann Arbor, Michigan, came in at No. 4 and Mason, Ohio, rounded out the top five.

The financial service provider IPX1031 has conducted a study to determine the overall best states in which to own a tiny home. As the hot housing market grows more competitive, the demand for so-called tiny homes has only increased. They offer a lower-risk investment for first-time buyers with prices ranging between $30,000 and $60,000, according to the National Association of Realtors. As the tiny-house movement swept the U.S., many homeowners have downsized to properties below 600 square feet.
The cheapest states to purchase a tiny home in are (in order) Mississippi, Nebraska, North Dakota, New Hampshire and Kentucky. But a good price does not always reflect the quality of life. So to determine the overall best state to live in a tiny home, the IPX1031 ranking considers many factors: median income, the cost of living index, regional temperature and the percentage of public park space.
With that in mind, Massachusetts ranks as the No. 9 best state to live in a tiny home. There, the average cost to purchase is $46,520. Coupled with the high median income of $85,843 and a relatively large percentage of park space — 4.23% — it’s a solid environment to begin your tiny home adventure.
However, the top five states in the ranking are Georgia, Texas and Kansas, Florida and California.
