From a reader’s comments:
I was initially excited by Menino’s proposal to relocate City Hall and free up that huge waste of space that is City Hall Plaza, but have since cooled to the idea somewhat.
I am now beginning to think that the better options would be to not inconvenience the people who need to access City Hall and work with and improve what we’ve got. Some ideas:
– if City Hall is too small, add on to it
– relocate the Haymarket produce and fish sellers to CHP liven it up
– redesign the MBTA head house to make it less bunker-like
– open up a “greenhouse”-like cafe on the square, similar to Milk Street Cafe in Post Office Square
– how about a summer installation of sand, beach umbrellas, a carousel, patches of green summery grass, etc. from June through Labor Day, similar to Paris’ “beach” along the Seine
– swap the Seaport land with the JFK Federal Building property and relocate the more security-sensitive federal building to the Seaport, use the former JFK site for multi-income housing and a hotel
– reopen the cross street uniting Cambridge/Tremont with the North End [ed. Hanover Street, I think he means]
– use the Plaza space as a Christmas market (most European cities have these all December long)
– install works of modern public art, Chicago has lots of iconic, world-class public art, Boston has none
