USA Today took a tour of South Boston, recently, and discovered a lot of changes.
Its public housing projects have been integrated; its wood frame triple-deckers are being converted to condominiums and sold to outsiders; its rich legacy of Irish organized crime has attracted Hollywood’s interest.
“The neighborhood is changing before our eyes,” says State Sen. Jack Hart, who was raised there. “Over the past five years, something like half the residents are new.”
More than 25 major condo projects are underway or set to begin. “Southie was a nice little secret,” says Mike Foley, a real estate broker, “but the lid is off.”
That’s because Southie is relatively safe. It has nice beaches and water views. It is close to Logan International Airport and downtown — Mary Cooney, a nurse, sometimes walks to Filene’s Basement department store.
And it’s a relative bargain.
There are some nice condo projects going up in South Boston, and there is a glut of conversions on the market, right now.
Worth taking a look at.
Or, not.
