The following are excerpts from the 2019 Greater Boston Housing Report card
Greater Boston’s economy has experienced strong growth over the past several decades. Total employment in the region increased from 2.1 million in 1990 to nearly 2.6 million in 2018.
Since 2012, Greater Boston has added 327,000 jobs and seen employment growth in each of the five counties, with particularly strong growth Suffolk county. The strong pace of job growth has put increasing pressure on the region’s infrastructure, transportation network, and housing supply.
One of the keys to the region’s long-term economic success is creating a more comprehensive approach to housing supply and housing affordability, which would more fully recognize the close connection between economic development, transportation, and housing and the role these issues play in the quality of life of members of our community, particularly those in middle- and lower-income households.
