Scott has really opened up a can of worms: Are homeowners with kids getting a free ride in property taxes?
His post has already generated dozens of comments.
Here’s how Scott introduces the subject:
OK, it seems fairly mean-spirited to cast homeowners with children as moochers, living off the municipal largesse.
But I suspect in our increasingly selfish and graying society there are more than a few people out there who think having children is some sort of strange indulgence, a lifestyle choice that forces everyone else to pay higher taxes to support the local schools.
Here’s Jima, a frequent contributor to the comments section of this blog, who feels homeowners with school age children are “riding free” on the backs of the suffering childless like him.
Here’s our rules of thumb on such matters:
If you move to a community for the quality of its education, expect to: A.) Pay more in taxes. B.) Pay more for homes because you’re not the only one searching for a community with good schools.
If you’re childless and want to live in a community with lower taxes, then A.) Get hold of one of those “best schools” lists. B.) Turn the list upside down C.) Grab a mirror. D.) Start searching for the communities with the lowest taxes.
