I knew it wasn’t a good idea to look through my girlfriend’s phone, but I couldn’t help myself. She had been a little distant lately. I just wanted to check nothing was going on.

I scrolled through her calls and texts. Nothing unusual there.

Her photos though.

Pictures of a man, laying on the couch with blood on dripping onto the floor. He was clearly in distress, bleeding from his head too.

It was her ex. The one who’d gone missing.

“He’d always bought me such terrible birthday gifts,” she’d once told me.

I suddenly woke up, I fell asleep on the couch watching a crime show.

I heard her coming down the stairs.

I put on my running shoes.

I ran out the door, for my next Beacon Hill condo for sale showing.
