What are the top 5 smartest cities? Hint Boston isn’t one of them
Boston has been named one of the smartest cities in the country, according to a new report. But it didn’t make the top 5/
Coworking Cafe ranked the country’s top smart cities for 2025 by analyzing more than 370 cities across 13 metrics including AI and Internet of Things company presence, availability of free Wi-Fi, zero-waste programs, transportation, connectivity and opportunities for tech jobs. The metrics were then split into three weighted groups: smart infrastructure and connectivity (45%), sustainability and green initiatives (35%) and the tech job market (20%).
Where Did Downtown Boston Rank?
Boston ranked No. 8 overall and was cited for its EV adoption, and with 521 charging points, the city ranked ninth in the nation for promoting EVs. Beantown was also noted for having 48 co-working spaces, 65 free Wi-Fi locations and 489 LEED-certified green buildings.
Boston was called a leader in AI and IoT company presence, “making it a stronghold for technological advancement.”
“Boston’s commitment to sustainability and innovation is driven by initiatives like the Smart City Playbook, the Boston Green New Deal and the Smart Utilities Program, which integrate smart technologies, promote carbon neutrality and enhance urban development,” the report said.
So, which cities made the top 5?
The top 5 smartest cities
San Francisco topped the list, followed by; New York and San Jose, California. Washington, D.C. and Austin, Texas rounded out the top five.
