I wanted to get a haircut for our Easter dinner. So I went to a barbershop for a hair cut and a shave. As the barber began to work, we began to have a good conversation and talked about sports and other various subjects. We eventually touched on the subject of Easter Sunday and God, the barber said: I don’t believe that God exists.
Why do you say that? I asked.
Well, just go out in the street to realize that God doesn’t exist. Tell me, if God exists, would there be so many sick people? Would there be abandoned children? If God existed, there would be neither suffering nor pain. I can’t imagine a loving God who would allow all of these things.
I thought for a moment, but didn’t respond because I didn’t want to start an argument, especially with aa barber who was shaving my face with a sharp instrument. The barber finished his job and as Iooked down on the floor I was shock of the amount grey hair that came from my head, it made me, well – sad.
Sitting in a chair against the back wall, wating for his turn to get a hair cut, an old man said to the barber: You know what? God exists, but barbers do not exist.
How can you say that? asked the surprised barber.
I am here, and I am a barber. And I just worked on this Boston Beacon Hill broker grey hair.
No! the customer exclaimed. Barbers don’t exist because if they did, there would be no people with salt and pepper grey hair needing a haircurt like this Beacon Hill condo broker. Look out the window, the old man said, do you see that man with dirty long hair and untrimmed beard?
Ah yes, but barbers DO exist! That’s what happens when people do not come to me (the barber).
Exactly! affirmed the old man. That’s the point! God, too, DOES exist! Because people do not look to God for help this is why there’s so much pain and suffering in the world.
