I’m not a cranky person. I only get annoyed at things that are annoying.
Like, noisy neighbors.
If you live in a condo, you probably have an upstairs neighbor, a downstairs neighbor, and perhaps a neighbor or two on your own floor.
A potentially disastrous situation, all around.
We had a very noisy neighbor, downstairs, the last place I lived. Terrible. Loved his video games! He didn’t live there when we moved in (no one did), but a couple months later, he was there (he was a relative of the developer, so he wasn’t going anywhere …).
It made it a terrible place to live. Fortunately, he moved out, after six months, or so. The new guy who moved in was a recent widower, so, beyond the occasional sobbing, he was quiet (seriously).
If you are thinking of buying, be very careful about this – both for your own comfort, and for when you sell, down the road.
Best tip? Visit the property at different times of the day. In a overheated market, such as the past several years, you probably didn’t think you had the right or time to go back multiple times, to check out the property, You should have. Now, in a slower real estate market, you should demand it. You want to make sure you don’t have any surprises.
The worst place to live? Possibly any rear first or second floor apartment in the Back Bay. I don’t know how many times I’d be out with clients in one of this places, and look out the back window to see ten or twenty trash barrels, just feet from the back windows. Guess what? Those trash barrels are emptied by guys and a garbage truck, twice a week. Perhaps at 4:00 AM. Garbage trucks make noise.
Oh, and most of the time, garbage smells, too.
