** BREAKING ** (Whoops, I don’t know how breaking it can be since it was on the cover of the Herald, today. Guess I should stop posting things while still in my pajamas.)

Boston, Massachusetts lost more population, on a percentage basis, than any other area in the country, over the past five years, according to estimates released yesterday by the Census Bureau.

The Census Bureau is reporting that Suffolk County, which includes Boston, Chelsea, Revere, and Winthrop, lost 35,515 inhabitants, or 5.15% of its population, during the period between the 2000 US Census and July 1, 2005.

Berkshire County and Middlesex County also lost population; Berkshire lost 2,944 people, or 2.18%, and Middlesex lost 9,770 people, or 0.67%.

Plymouth County and Worcester County both saw gains, of 3.77% and 4.06%, respectively.

Massachusetts, as a whole, gained population; 36,611 people, an increase over five years of 0.58%.
