Commonwealth tax revenue up. And, down.
The Commonwealth of Massachusetts appears to be weathering the economic slowdown pretty well, all things considered.
According to the state Department of Revenue, in August:
* Corporate tax withholding was down 28%, compared to last year;
• Withholding collections were up more than 10 percent;
• Income tax collections for August were up 10 percent;
• Sales tax collections were about the same as last August.
So far, the state has collected $136 million in fiscal year 2009, or 5.3 percent more than during the previous fiscal year.
