What’s the cost of the new stadium then, per viewer?

Ouch.

From the Numbers Guy’s blog:

At Major League Baseball’s All-Star Break, the Washington Nationals are last in wins, last in batting average, last in slugging percentage — and last in local television ratings.

Last week, Sports Business Journal printed a chart of average television viewership for the 30 major-league teams on their local stations. The Nationals broadcasts on the cable network Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (MASN) were averaging just a 0.39 rating in the Washington, D.C., area, which translates to 9,000 households out of 2.3 million, according to Nielsen Media Research … The Yankees, Red Sox and Mets each were averaging more than 200,000 viewers for their local telecasts.

Washington is the only baseball town where more people go to games (29,700) than watch on TV (even assuming a generous ratio of three viewers per household).

Yikes, nine thousand. More people probably watch reruns of “Wings” than the baseball game.

But, we have baseball in our nation’s capital!

N.B. I thought they were called the “Senators”.

DC is not a good market for baseball. The people that are baseball fans there are already invested into other teams (notably Baltimore).
