South Boston’s future looks bright
The Herald’s Peter Gelzinis gives a big “thumbs up” to the new apartment project currently under construction in South Boston, at the corners of A Street and West Broadway. Soon, hundreds of Bostonians will be living in brand new homes, bringing a sense of vitality and vibrancy to an otherwise moribund area.
Oh, wait, he sees things quite differently.
This week, on the first block of West Broadway in Southie’s Lower End, a beloved piece of the neighborhood died. The bulldozers chewed up what was once a Catholic high school for the daughters of working-class families and, for more than 150 years, the home base of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur.
(Mr Gelzinis makes a mistake in his column: this project is apartments, not condos.)
