My name is John A Keith. I am a real estate broker in Boston. Along with my team of agents, I help buyers and sellers of homes throughout Boston, including the South End, Back Bay, and Beacon Hill neighborhoods.

The food was so bad … and the portions so small!

So, they want to extend the MBTA Green Line into Somerville and Medford. (Can we just finish Kenmore Square, first, for pete’s sake?)

I love the idea, as I am a fan of public transportation in general.

Many others love the idea, as well (including a couple of real estate agents I know, who are already advertising their listings with “Coming soon, new Green Line station in Teele Square!”, which is a bit premature, don’t you think?).

Some people, of course, are not so pleased.

While some others are not so pleased that others are not so pleased.

From the Globe:

Medford representatives and residents, meanwhile, were upset about the location of a station platform near Tufts University, which they said favored the school at the expense of residents who oppose the project and don’t want a station in their neighborhood.

I love that. LOVE IT!

“We don’t want the extension to go through our neighborhood, and now you’re punishing us … BY NOT PUTTING THE EXTENSION THROUGH OUR NEIGHBORHOOD!”

I was under the impression the Medford residents were saying something different: they were upset because they shared a neighborhood with Tufts, and they do not want a station nearby, but Tufts does, and the MBTA was putting Tufts’ desire for a station ahead of the residents’ desire not to have a station.

(Either way, these residents probably have forgotten that they live in a metropolitan area known for its universities and public transportation alike!)

I think it’s a great idea to put a station at Tufts. It’s actually one of the schools I was interested in doing a masters at but the location isn’t very convenient. Obviously the school would benefit from it greatly, but so would residents. It would bring more business to the community and increase property values around the stop since it would be commutable.

The medford residents in question (particularly one Bill Wood, whose anti-train venom makes me think that maybe his mother’s car got stuck on the tracks or something) are mostly just NIMBY (not in my backyard) types who are worried about the face of their neighborhood changing via gentrification and/or losing some of their property (maybe a strip of their backyard). If I owned over there, I’d be happy to move and take money hand-over-fist from boston commuters when the extension is complete.
