MBTA moves forward on Silver Line, Phase III, at bus speed

mbta silver line phase III

Apparently, the MBTA is still considering extending the Silver Line along Charles Street South, or somewhere near there.

The idea is (in case you haven’t been paying attention over the past nineteen years), the Silver Line bus line that goes down Washington Street in the South End will travel by tunnel between some point on Tremont / Washington to South Station, where it will continue on to the Airport. Much better than the current trip which involves … I don’t know, but I think I saw Plymouth Rock outside my window, last time I went to Logan.

Props to the MBTA leaflet writer who alerts us to the news that testing will continue to June 31st.

Which is just a week or two after June umpteenth, I believe.

The Silver Line tunnel is a terrible waste of tax payer money. Current projections place construction costs at about $770 million.

The existing Silver Line tunnel that goes between South Station and airport cost $460 million and only gets about 4,000 riders per day. It would have cheaper to hire limos for the all these folks.

Another $500 million MBTA fiasco is the Greenbush line on the South Shore. Big dollars, and few riders.

On the other hand, the Silver Line that goes between the Common and Dudley Square cost about $50 million and gets over 16,000 riders per day. Perhaps the MBTA could add some express buses along this line to get people downtown quicker.
