The real ‘Bostonian of the Year’
The Globe is out today with its choice of ‘Bostonian of the Year’.
Who’d they choose?
Well, of course, someone (most of) you have never heard of, and probably never will.
You know, the bully.
The guy that Senator Dianne Wilkerson said was “the kind of person who would throw a Molotov cocktail and then run in with a fire extinguisher and declare himself the hero for putting out the fire.” (Yeah, in this case, she’s right on …)
Coming in second, this year, is Therese Murray. Senate President.
But, adding more insult to injury, the Globe doesn’t even give her the credit she deserves - they make her share the honor with some US Rep and … who?
Therese Murray had the guts to take on both the political Left and the Right, this year. She put the amendment to ban gay marriage to a vote, not knowing the outcome. Some on the Left wanted to quash a vote (fearing the outcome), while the Right wanted the issue to be put on the 2008 ballot. She also had to put up with immense pressure from national-figure Democrats who wanted the issue dealt with, NOW, so that it wouldn’t become a national issue, next year.
The results of her effort may have even surprised herself. She took the anti-gay marriage amendment to a vote … and it was voted down, in a super-majority.
A special thanks to the nine lawmakers who changed their votes. They took a look at their own beliefs and (apparently) voted their conscience.
There was nothing to be gained by changing their vote. They did it, anyway.
And leading them and all of us to victory? Therese Murray.
(Also, special thanks to Marc Solomon at Mass Equality.)
