The Sears Buildings - apparently, modular was in, then

Maybe I’m the last to know about this.

Apparently, the Sears, Roebuck Company liked consistency in its buildings.

In the early 20th century, the corporation built several large buildings across the United States that were very similar, if not identical, in design.

Who knew?

Here are some of their buildings, built around the same time.

Sears building, Minneapolis

Sears building, Boston

Sears building, Memphis

Sears building, Chicago

Sears building, Oakland

Sears building, Brooklyn

Can’t remember

There was also one in Philadelphia, until a fire ruined it. It was later

demolished and turned into a crappy shopping center. So sad! I remember walking home from school

one day and seeing the smoke and flames coming out of the

    building.

I find it kinda cool that a company would build all its building the same.

Seeing your lineup of Sears-style buildings around the country,

I immediately guessed the locally-famous Starbucks World Headqurters started life as a Sears

building. Turns out it was Washington’s first Sears store. Still houses some Sears operations,

    actually. http://www.waymarking.com/waymarks/WM1D1F

That brown brick style one there is pretty common too. Or WAS. I remember there being one in KC, MO until the 80s when they tore it down. There is still one here in Atlanta though. It’s City Hall East, though soon they plan to move out. They say it’s loaded with asbestos. What will be it’s fate? Yuppie condos or the wrecking ball, and then….yuppie condos!
